What’s in the guide

For each park, the trails worth the trip: chosen to see the best even with just a few days.

One map per park

Relief, contour lines, roads and numbered, color-coded trails, with trailheads and destinations. Larger parks also get a detail map.

A card for every trail

Distance, elevation gain, time, difficulty and trailhead, then what to expect along the way and what to know: permits, shuttles, closures.

Before you go

For each park, the best season, the rules, safety and practical tips to plan your day.

A QR code per park

In each park’s title: scan it and your phone opens its page in the readers’ reserved area, with the trails ready to go.

GPX tracks

For every trail, to load into your hiking app or Garmin before you leave, since there’s often no signal in the parks.

From strolls to hikes

From half-hour walks anyone can do to full-day climbs, always with the difficulty level.

Take a look inside: Zion

The first two pages of Zion: map, introduction, park ID card, list of trails and the first trail cards.

From the book to the trail, in three steps

1 · Scan

the QR code in the park title: its page opens in the readers’ reserved area.

2 · Choose

the trail on the same map as in the book, with the cards and numbers.

3 · Go

with “Navigate to trailhead” to the parking area, and with the GPX on the trail.

Do I need Great Wild Journey?

No: Trails is a standalone book. Every park has its own map and trails here, and it works just as well if you fly in and rent a car for a week.

But it began as an extension of Great Wild Journey, the road-trip guide to every U.S. national park: if Great Wild Journey takes you by car from one park to the next, Trails takes you where the car can’t go.

Same parks, same order, same numbers: together, the complete journey.
